Choosing Cycle Clothing
If you are new to cycling the first two items of clothing you may want to buy are probably a cycling jersey and cycling shorts (This isn’t including a helmet which of course is essential)
If you are starting cycling in Summer then it’s probably best to buy a full zip cycling jersey. If it’s winter you may want to buy a part zip jersey, this is usually cheaper to buy. Most jerseys have 3 pockets on the back, steer clear of any jerseys that don’t as on long rides you may want to carry a lot in your pockets.
I would recommend a short sleeve jersey but also buy arm warmers. It’s then more versatile whatever the weather. A bright color is obviously safer when riding on the roads and there are many florescent jerseys available, also amongst professional team jerseys.
The main choice in shorts it whether to buy normal shorts or bib shorts. Most cyclists tend to favor bib shorts as normal shorts can have a tendency to gradually slip down which is very frustrating if riding long distances. In terms of color the same applies as above, and you will probably want your shorts to match your jersey.
Some other items to consider
Socks – If you are riding in warm temperatures you may be very glad to have some breathable cycling socks
Arm Warmers – As mentioned above arm warmers are an extremely useful item of clothing great for cool temperatures and small and light to carry in a pocket.
Gloves – For riding in the winter full finger gloves are advisable as your fingers may get very cold. Fingerless gloves are available and better for warmer weather.
